Strawberry Planter Ideas

Strawberries are simple to grow and are the perfect addition to any garden! But just as we love to eat them, critters love them too. This means we have to get creative with how we grow them. No matter how big or small your garden is, there are many fun strawberry planter ideas to try.

Don’t worry if you’re not the DIY type. Most of these ideas require minimal effort and can be done with supplies you probably already have at home. But if you’re feeling crafty, you can definitely put your own spin on these projects and create a unique look!

11 DIY Strawberry Planter Ideas: Get Creative with Your Garden

Traditional Strawberry Pot

I know this might not be the most exciting idea, but it’s a classic for a reason!

Traditional strawberry pots have little pockets all around the sides where you can plant your strawberries. They’re usually made of terra cotta, but you can get plastic or ceramic ones as well. Just make sure to place them in a spot with full sun and water regularly.

Hanging Strawberry Planter

Strawberries grow great in hanging baskets. They keep them off the ground and away from slugs and other pests. Plus, you can hang them anywhere – on a balcony, porch, pergola, or any other sturdy structure.

The strawberries will hang down from the basket, which looks really cute and is an easy way to display them. Use a good potting mix and water regularly – your hanging basket can dry out quickly.

Tiered Strawberry Planter

This is a great alternative to the traditional strawberry pot, and you can use containers you already have at home. Place the largest container at the bottom, fill it with soil, then place a smaller one on top, and so on. Each pot should have plenty of drainage holes to prevent water from pooling. Plant your strawberry plants around the edges, leaving enough space for them to grow and spread out.

You can create a tiered planter as tall or as small as you want. Don’t forget the water from the top containers will exit through the drainage holes, so be careful not to overwater the lower levels.

Strawberry Pallet Planter

You’ll need some DIY skills and tools like a saw, hammer, and nails for this one. The idea is to create a wooden planter by repurposing an old wooden pallet. You can make it any size or shape your space allows. Just make sure there’s enough space for the roots to spread; around 8-12 inches deep is ideal.

Here are some step-by-step instructions for making a DIY strawberry planter:

  1. Make sure the pallet is clean and free from any chemicals. Avoid treated wood as it may contain harmful chemicals that could seep into the soil and affect your plants.
  2. Measure and mark where you’ll need to cut the pallet. There must be a bottom and sides for the planter to hold the soil and plants.
  3. Assemble the sides and attach them to the bottom of the pallet.
  4. Add some wheels to the bottom if you want to move it around easily.
  5. Line the bottom of the pallet planter with some mesh or wire to prevent the soil from falling out. Add a layer of mulch to help with drainage.
  6. Fill the planter with soil, leaving enough space for your strawberry plants.
  7. Plant your strawberries and water them thoroughly.
  8. Place the wooden strawberry planter in a sunny spot and watch your strawberries grow!

Raised Strawberry Bed

Keeping your strawberries off the ground can help prevent pests and diseases. You can create your own raised strawberry planter or buy one pre-made. Add some expanded clay, pebbles, or gravel to the bottom for drainage.

Strawberries also make great companion plants for lettuce, onions, cilantro, and asparagus! Add these to your raised bed for a delicious and diverse garden.

Tire Stack Planter

This one is similar to the tiered planter, but instead of using pots, old tires are stacked on top of each other. The tires provide excellent drainage and retain heat, making them a great option for strawberries. You do need a lot of outdoor space if using more than a few tires – use as many or as little as you need.

Always thoroughly clean used tires before filling the center with soil and planting strawberries.

Here are some ideas for your tire strawberry planter:

  • Lay 4 equal-sized tires in a square pattern and add smaller tires on top, stacking in the middle like a strawberry pyramid.
  • Alternate tire sizes to create a unique, layered look.
  • Paint the tires in fun colors or patterns to add some personality to your garden. Only use non-toxic paint and avoid painting the inner portion of the tires where the plants grow.
  • Ensure the tire stack is safe and secure. Consider adding some stakes or rods to keep the tires in place and prevent them from toppling over.

Wheelbarrow Strawberry Garden

Reuse an old wheelbarrow by turning it into a mobile strawberry garden. Drill some holes in the bottom for drainage and fill it with soil. This looks great on a patio or deck, and you can easily move it around to catch the best sun!

Strawberry Wall Planters

If you’ve got a small space and would prefer not to use a traditional planter, wall planters are a great way to plant strawberries. Attach a support bracket to a wall and hang your strawberry plants in plastic pots or reusable bags.

This vertical planter is a great space-saving option and adds interest to an otherwise unused wall. Plus, a container garden keeps the strawberries off the ground and away from pests.

PVC Pipe Strawberry Tower

If you’ve got some leftover PVC pipes lying around, why not turn them into a DIY strawberry tower planter? This DIY project is great for small spaces, as the strawberries will grow vertically and take up less space. It also offers excellent drainage and airflow for the plants.

Here’s how to make a vertical strawberry planter:

  1. The PVC pipe needs to be around 3-5 feet tall. You’ll also need a heavy-bottomed pot, around 8-10 inches wide.
  2. Drill holes up the pipe for the plants to grow through. Ensure they are evenly spaced and around 2 inches in diameter.
  3. Fill the pot with soil and place the PVC pipe in the center.
  4. Gradually fill up the vertical strawberry tube planter with soil. As the soil reaches each hole, add a strawberry plant and continue filling.
  5. Water the new plants thoroughly, making sure the soil is moist but not waterlogged.

Wooden Crate Strawberry Garden

Arrange some old wooden crates (apple crates work well) in a pyramid shape and fill them with soil. Plant your strawberries in the top crate and have them cascade down to the bottom box. This not only looks visually appealing but also makes for easy picking when it’s time to harvest.

Please note: You should only use non-treated wooden crates.

Strawberry Grow Bags

Say goodbye to traditional pots and try out grow bags for your strawberries. These are lightweight, easy to move around, and allow for better air circulation for the plant’s roots! An old laundry basket could also work.

Then, when you’re done using them, simply fold them up and store them away for the next growing season.

Final Thoughts

Growing strawberries in containers is the best way to enjoy fresh, homegrown strawberries, no matter how much space you have! Just ensure whichever planter you use has proper drainage and is large enough to accommodate the plant’s root system. It should also be placed somewhere with at least 6-8 hours of sunlight.

So long as these conditions are met, you can harvest your fresh strawberries in no time!
